October 2005

All in all we had very good weather during this month, from the 11th onward the seas were flat calm on many days. Visibility was good overall but a couple of sites like L'ilot, Chuckles and Sunset Rocks were on occasion still suffering the silty current from past dredging activities in Victoria.

Aquarium

We made a number of night dives on this site and they were amazing, there was so much to see during all of the dives. Loads of spiny Lobsters, and always one or more sleeping Turtles, Green Turtles as well as Hawksbills. A Flying Gurnard has been seen on a couple of the night dives. A beautiful orange colored Octopus which only seems to come out at night. And then the usual stuff like the Hermit Crabs, Moray Eels and Conger Eels, but also  Nudibranches like the Gromodoris Geminus the bright colored one that you can see below, and Spanish Dancers.

Shark Bank

Even though there was not much special around during a couple of dives we made here, this place is always spectacular. The huge school of Blue Striped Snappers is set in a beautiful underwater landscape always there. On most dives we saw the Great Barracuda's, and sometimes on the edge of the site the Yellow Tail Barracuda's. Also several stingrays were there on a couple of occasions and a lone Humphead Parrotfish which seems to be a resident now. The pictures on the left are from this dive site.

Silhouette Island

Once we made a visit to this big Island. We had really good visibility at Grand Barbe dive site and a terrific dive with three Nurse Sharks, some barracuda's, Giant Moray Eels, Humphead Parrotfish, Eagle Rays and so on. And our second dive at Roche Larai was also great. We saw this huge big Hawksbill the moment we jumped into the water, later on we saw Octopus, Eagle Rays, Napoleon Wrasses, and some schooling Big Eye Snappers. Our visit to the island was great as ever with spectacular views and all the Tortoises which still seem to outnumber the human inhabitants of the island.

Aquarium

This dive site is easy as it is shallow and seldom has a current of any notice. This month we had some spectacular sighting here of Indian Ocean Walkman, these creatures are a amazing to look at. Like the common Devil Scorpion Fish they are a member of the scorpion fishes, and just like the Devil Scorpion Fish they also have pectoral fins that are bright orange colored on the inside. A couple of Leaf Fish can often be seen on one of the coral hills, and besides that a  Green Turtle and a Hawksbill are a frequent guest. The picture of the Spider Conch I made because of the coral growing on it. We have noticed that coral is growing quite fast actually and I just wonder weather this Conch will be able to move about when it grows much more. The pictures right and below are from Aquarium.

L'ilot

The visibility was bad on some dives and quite good on other dives. And on some dives it was mixed, bad on one side of the island and good on the other side of the island. The pictures at right and below are from L'ilot and show only a small part the variety we saw. There is always a lot of fish here but especially when there is some current around the dives are always fantastic.

 Ile au Vaches

We visited this site in the hope to see a Whale Shark some where in that direction, and we did. We could stay with her until we were tired of all the snorkeling we did with her. But it was marvelous, she just stayed around and was kind of bobbing in the waves just below the surface. At Ile au Vaches we had a great dive, there was lot's to be seen, Octopus, White Mouth Moray Eels, Stingrays, White Tip Reef Sharks, Giant Groupers, schooling Jacks, Schooling Squid, and all the reef fishes and some fantastic coral too.

Sunset Rocks

The Peppered moray eels were just popping up everywhere, a spectacular sight was it to see them sitting next to several Leaf Fishes. The visibility here was not always good but the sightings were really worthwhile to come here.

Joker

We had good and bad visibility here on different dives, but there was always some nice things to be seen. Like Porcupine Stingrays in the sand next to the reef and Lion Fish hovering around their coral homes.
